Women's Basketball Calms Hurricanes
Hokies clinch first BIG EAST victory

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team scored their first BIG EAST win in history Sunday, when they defeated the Miami Hurricanes, 64-51.

Tech controlled the game from the opening tip until the final buzzer, shooting an impressive 49% from the field. The Hurricanes struggled from the field, shooting a dismal 30% in the first half and 32.4% for the game. The Hokies impressive first half shooting allowed them to build a 12-point lead before halftime and they never looked back.

Tere Williams collected her 25th career double-double in the victory. Williams connected on 7-of-11 shots from the field and was a near perfect 8-of-9 from the free throw line to give her 22 points in the win. Williams' 12 rebounds also led both teams. Williams' eight free throws made gives her a career total of 431, tying her with Renee Dennis for the most free throws made in a career.

Sarah Hicks and Amy Wetzel also played well for the Hokies. Hicks finished with 10 points and three assists while Wetzel scored 11 points in the contest.

Chanivia Broussard led the Hurricanes in scoring. Broussard connected on only 5-of-21 shots to give her a total of 10 points on the evening. Shelia James was second on the team in scoring with nine.

The win improves Tech's record to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Hurricanes drop to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Hokies will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
