Tech rebounding proves to be the difference

RICHMOND, Va. (12-2-00) -- Virginia Tech used a dominate performance on the boards and double-doubles from Tere Williams and Sarah Hicks to pull out a 77-74 squeaker over Richmond Saturday afternoon.

Tech (5-1), who led by as many as 11 points in the second half, needed two free throws from Crystal Starling with one second remaining to seal the victory. Richmond (2-4) had one last chance but missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

Tere Williams recorded her 25th career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds followed by Sarah Hicks 16 points and 11 boards. Hicks also set a career-high with seven assists and tied a career-high with the 10 rebounds. Amy Wetzet added 13 points while Chrystal Starling added 11 points and Ieva Kublia with a career-high 10 points.

Tech overcame a season-high 28 turnovers by outrebounding Richmond 45-28. The Hokies shot 49.2 percent for the game including 6-13 on treys. Krystn Gull led the Spiders with 19 points followed by Michelle Koclanes with 17 and Candice Edwards with 13.

Virginia Tech plays at #6 Rutgers next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in its first-ever BIG EAST Conference game.
