Tech crushes Tennessee Tech
Hot shooting propels Hokies to victory
November 25, 2006
MALIBU, Calif. - Virginia Tech used a dominant inside game and red-hot shooting to easily defeat Tennessee Tech, 87-52, in the consolation game of the Pepperdine Thanksgiving tournament. The event was played at Firestone Fieldhouse on the University of Pepperdine campus.
Tech (4-3) dominated from the outset by pounding the ball inside and never looked back in the lopsided affair. The Hokies shot 60.7 percent (37-61) from the field and never trailed, while dominating the boards with a 41-28 advantage. Tech scored 52 points in the paint while the Golden Eagles could muster only 10 on the inside.
Tennessee Tech (1-3) shot only 28.3 percent (17-60) from the field, but did connect on 10-of-21 shots from behind the arc.
The Hokies were led in scoring by Britney Anderson (Sr., Blacksburg, Va.) and Amber Hall (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) with 14 each followed by Nare Diawara (Sr., Bamako, Mali) and Kirby Copeland (Sr., Morrow, Ga.) with 13 and 10 points respectively. Copeland, who had a career-high 28 points in Friday's loss to Iowa State, was named to the All-tournament team.
Tech raced out to an 8-0 advantage before Tennessee Tech dropped in a couple of three-point shots prompting a quick Hokie time-out. Tech came out of the break and put together a 14-2 run and never looked back in extending the lead to 42-27. The second half was more of the same with the Hokies pounding the ball inside and cruising to the 35-point win.
The Hokies return to the hardwood Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host William & Mary at Cassell Coliseum.
