February 26, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Kirby Copeland, a senior guard from Morrow, Ga., has been named as an honorable mention selection to the 2007 All-Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball team. The squad is selected by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) consisting of media members who cover the ACC on a regular basis.

Copeland leads the Hokies in scoring averaging 15.3 per contest which is seventh in the ACC. She is also leading the team in assists (4.5) and steals (59). She has scored in double figures in 24 of her 28 games played this season and set career scoring highs with 28 points against both Iowa State and Morehead State.

"We are extremely proud that Kirby has been recognized as one of the finest players in the best league in the country," said Virginia Tech head coach Beth Dunkenberger. "She has been a big key to our season thus far."

Copeland became the 20th member of the Virginia Tech 1,000-point club this year with 17 points at Clemson. She currently has 1,043 career points which ranks 18th on the Tech all-time scoring list while her 181 career steals is fourth.

The Hokies (17-13, 6-8) enter the 30th Annual ACC Championship tournament as the seventh-seed and will have a rematch with Boston College (13-15, 3-11), the tenth seed, on Thurs., Mar. 1 at 6 p.m. The Hokies defeated the Eagles, 67-52, in their regular season finale last week. A victory would advance Tech to the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. against No. 2 seed North Carolina.
