Women's basketball set for trip to Pitt
Hokies face Panthers at 7 p.m. Thursday

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set for a trip to Pittsburgh to face the Panthers on Thursday, Feb. 12 in a 7 p.m. game at Petersen Event Center.

THE HOKIES (10-14, 1-10 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell to No. 13/11 North Carolina the last time out. Samantha Hill led the Hokies with 11 points. Taijah Campbell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sidney Cook and Hannah Young had nine points each.

The Hokies trailed the Tar Heels by just three points at the break. UNC used a big run to open the second half, outscoring Tech 20-4 in the opening nine minutes. The Hokies were unable to get anything going on the offensive side as Carolina claimed the win.

Vanessa Panousis leads the Hokies on the season in scoring with 13.3 points per game and handing out 3.5 assists per game to rank eighth in the conference. The sophomore guard is also fourth on the ACC list for three-pointers made, averaging 2.3. Rachel Camp is chipping in 13.0 ppg. Campbell leads the team with 6.8 rebounds (14th most in the league) while adding 7.6 ppg. Cook’s 6.2 rpg is good for 20th in the conference.

THE PANTHERS (15-8, 5-5 ACC)
Pittsburgh dropped a 48-35 decision at No. 8 Louisville in the team’s last contest. Stasha Carey and Aysia Bugg tallied 10 points each. Yacine Diop had eight points and team-high 11 rebounds.

The Panthers trailed 25-18 at the break, but were able to get it down to a one point difference midway through the second half. Louisville used a 17-5 run to close out the game and hold off Pitt.

Brianna Kiesel leads Pitt with 17.8 points per game, ranking fourth in the ACC. In addition, she handing out 4.9 apg to rank second. Monica Wignot is adding 11.6 ppg. Diop is chipping in 9.3 points and grabbing 7.3 rpg and Carey is tallying 9.3 ppg and a team-high 7.7 rpg.

Virginia Tech leads the series 6-2 and won the game last season 69-62 in Blacksburg. Panousis dropped in 21 points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out four assists. Campbell pulled down 11 boards for the Hokies while former Tech player Uju Ugoka tallied 14 points and 11 boards. Kiesel had 23 points for the Panthers and is the top returner for Pitt from that game.

The last time the two teams met in Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech picked up a 67-57 win. A quartet of former Hokie standouts reached double-digits in that game with Carrie Mason’s 15 points leading the way. Erin Gibson, Kirby Copeland and Ieva Kublina had 14, 13 and 10, respectively.

Up Next: The Hokies return home to host No. 23/22 Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 15 in a 2 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum.
