Hokies back on the court to host Mount St. Mary's
Tech faces Mountaineers at 3 p.m. Saturday

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is back on the court following the exam break to host Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.

Virginia Tech downed Coppin State, 72-39 the last time out. Hannah Young led the team with a career-high 23 points while knocking down six 3-pointers to tie the Cassell Coliseum record. Young also pulled down seven rebounds. Vanessa Panousis and Chanette Hicks each added nine points while Sidney Cook tallied nine points and seven boards.

The Hokies jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Coppin State 17-7 in the opening quarter. The Eagles closed it to a nine-point game in the second quarter, but Young went to work, scoring eight points to close out the half and send the Hokies into the break up 31-12. Young kept her momentum going hitting back-to-back 3-pointers out of the break. Coppin State matched the Hokies in the third quarter with Tech holding the slight 21-20 advantage in the frame, but the Eagles got no closer than 17 the rest of the way as the Hokies used a 17-0 run in the final 10 minutes to roll to the win.

Panousis leads the Hokies, averaging 12.7 points per game. Young is adding 10.9 points and 5.7 rebounds. Hicks is chipping in 9.8 ppg, tallying 2.9 steals and 3.8 assists per game. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 6.6 rpg and chipping in 7.6 ppg while Cook is notching 8.8 points and 5.3 rpg.

Mount St. Mary’s fell to Howard 62-49 in the team’s last game. Sarafina Arthur-Williams and Katrice Dickson led the Mountaineers with 12 points each while Alexis Carter added 11. Arthur-Williams and Kayla Bates led on the boards, grabbing six rebounds a piece.

MSM led 17-13 after the first quarter, but Howard powered back in the second to outscore the Mountaineers 22-4 to take a 35-21 lead into the break. Mount St. Mary’s held the advantage in the third frame 20-18, but it was enough to overcome the Bison as Howard claimed the win.

Carter leads the Mountaineers with 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Jessica Harris is adding 10.7 ppg. Jody Chickey has dished out 31 assists on the season.

Mount St. Mary’s has also played the ACC’s Pitt this season, falling to the Panthers 74-57. In addition, MSM and the Hokies both played Coppin State with the Mountaineers falling to the Eagles 66-55.

This is just the second meeting between Virginia Tech and Mount St. Mary’s. The Hokies won that game 44-42 on Dec. 9, 2009 in Blacksburg. Former Tech player Lindsay Biggs led all scorers with 15 points.
