MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Virginia Tech fell to the Butler Bulldogs 79-77 Friday night from Titan Field House in Melbourne, Fla. The loss is the Hokies’ lone blemish on the season, dropping their record to 5-1, while Butler advanced to 4-2 on the season.

The Hokies came out and allowed the first two buckets of the game, and throughout the first quarter found themselves down by as much as nine.

Kendyl Brooks, once again hit two three-pointers in the opening frame, providing a spark for the Hokies.

At the break, the game was tied after Tech went on a late 16-9 run to close the gap. Taylor Emery, Regan Magarity and Chanette Hicks led the charge, combining for 23 of Tech’s 37 first half points.

Butler was strong in the low post all night as forward Tori Schickel went for 27 points and 15 total rebounds. Kristen Spyler added 20 points including a 3-point jumper from the wing

Magarity and Hicks each tallied double-doubles, while Emery once again led the Hokies with a 20-point performance. Hicks got her teammates involved all night as she dished out 12 assists to go with her 12 points and five rebounds.

Magarity tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double of the season.

Aisha Sheppard, who knocked down four timely three-pointer throughout the night nailed a clutch three-pointer with 13 seconds to go from the wing that put the Hokies up by one. On the ensuing possession, Spoyler hit her shot that ended up being the game-winner.


• Chanette Hicks’ five steals Friday moved her career tally to 239, moving her past Amy Wetzel for second all-time in program history.

• Kendyl Brooks continued her impressive shooting streak, knocking down a three-pointer in her 14th consecutive game.


Tech takes on the No. 11 West Virginia Mountaineers at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25. It will be the 17th all-time meeting between the teams.
