The 2011 men's soccer team was a young group that at times started an entire lineup of underclassmen, including nine freshmen or sophomores.
The team's signature win of the season was its ACC opener at Thompson Field on Sept. 10 as the Hokies defeated then No. 1 ranked and eventual national champion North Carolina, 1-0 in double overtime in front of a season-high 2,052 fans. James Shupp scored the game-winning goal for Tech in the 103rd minute.
In September, the Hokies posted a three-game winning streak, their first since the 2007 season, when they won 14 matches and advanced to the College Cup. During that stretch, Tech posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
The Hokies were solid at home, posting a 4-4-2 record, including a scoreless draw against nationally-ranked Virginia on Oct. 21. The tie was only the second time the in-state rivals have played to a draw in the series history.
Midfielder Ben Strong led the Hokies in assists and points, while also tying for the team lead in goals, and goalkeeper Kyle Renfro posted four shutouts and led the ACC in saves.
