It’s Game Week in Blacksburg!

With the season opener just days away, Virginia Tech ended the competition for the starting quarterback spot by naming Michael Brewer, a transfer from Texas Tech, as the starter. Brewer beat out Mark Leal for the job, leaving Leal as the No. 2 quarterback and Brenden Motley as the No. 3.

Tech coach Frank Beamer also named freshman Michael Santamaria as the starting kicker. Santamaria beat out fellow freshmen Joey Slye and Carson Wise for the job.

Led by freshman receiver Isaiah Ford’s three touchdown receptions, Tech scored five touchdowns in the final scrimmage of August, and the first-team defense only gave up one score in that scrimmage, as the Hokies head into game week.

Tech opens the season Saturday against William & Mary at Lane Stadium. Kickoff time is slated for 4 p.m.
