February 11, 2005

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia Tech wrestling team defeated North Carolina, 21-15, to improve to 4-0 in the ACC Friday evening at Fitzer Gymnasium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Hokie win also tied the school record for dual victories in a season with 14. Tech is now 14-4 overall, 4-0 in the ACC. Tech could set a new school record for dual victories by defeating either UNC Greensboro or N.C. State, their final dual meets of the season.

Also as a team, the Hokies have 227 total individual match wins, just eight wins shy of the school record of 238 set in 1998.

The Hokies were paced in the match by senior Reed Carpenter's fall at 157 pounds over Aaron Holt and freshman Justin Staylor's fall at 125 pounds over Drew Forshey. The pins were Carpenter's fifth and Staylor's 13th of the season.

Both Carpenter and Staylor remain undefeated in the ACC with 4-0 records. Carpenter is now 19-7 overall, while Staylor improves to 23-10 overall.

Sophomore Tyde Prater moved to 13-8 overall, 4-0 in the ACC with a 9-8 decision over Chris Ramos at 149 pounds. Prater scored a takedown and three-point near fall in the first period then another takedown and a pair of escapes to close out the match.

Junior Steve Borja recorded his team-high sixth major decision of the season with a 10-2 score over Justin Dobies of North Carolina at the 184 pounds weight class. Borja moves to 28-7 overall, 4-0 in the ACC with the victory, 15-3 in dual matches.

Junior Mike Faust sealed the victory for the Hokies with a 4-3, four-overtime, decision of Spencer Nadolsky at heavyweight to remain undefeated, 4-0, in the ACC. Faust is now 26-5 overall, 17-1 in dual matches.

The Tech grapplers now return home to Blacksburg for their final home dual of the season against visiting UNC Greensboro, Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
