Five Tech wrestling signees honored by Wrestling USA

BLACKSBURG, VA - Five future members of the Virginia Tech wrestling team were named to Wrestling USA magazine's Scholastic All-American Teams Wednesday.

Brent Metcalf, Joey Slaton, Daniel LeClere, Jay Borschel, and T.H. Leet were all named to the 2005 Scholastic All-American Teams determined by editors of Wrestling USA.

The magazine names a dream team, academic or second team, All-American or third team and honorable mention team.

Metcalf was named to the 13-person Academic Team after he finished his high school career 228-0 with 180 falls. He was a four-time Michigan state champion at Davidson for head coach Roy Hall and a two-time junior national freestyle champion.

Slaton, LeClere and Borschel were all named to the All-American team. Slaton finished his career 165-11 overall with two Iowa state titles, and two runner-up finishes at Kennedy high school under head coach Brent Paulson. He won 75 matches by fall and placed second at the high school nationals.

LeClere finished 167-2 overall with 105 falls and four Iowa state titles at North-Linn for head coach Brad Bridgewater. He also placed third at the cadet national freestyle championships.

Borschel was a four-time Iowa state champion at Linn-Mar high school for coach Doug Streicher with a 163-1 career record and 95 career falls. He also finished fourth at the high school nationals.

Leet was named honorable mention All-America after a 178-9 career record with 50 falls for the Westminister Schools' coach Jeff Olberding. In four years, he finished was a three-time Georgia state champion and one-time state runner-up.

The teams are determined by seven factors: Overall high school accomplishments, national junior freestyle and Greco-roman success, national high school senior championships, cadet national placement and nomination forms and letters by coaches and parents.
