November 27, 2005
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - While their teammates were busy competing in New York, members of the Virginia Tech wrestling team scheduled to redshirt this year made the trip to Carmichael Auditorium Saturday to participate in the Carolina Open Tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina. All of those competing wrestled unattached, meaning the results do not count toward their varsity record.
Four Hokies - Joe Slaton at 133 pounds, Brent Metcalf at 149 pounds, Jay Borschel at 174 pounds and Steve Borja at 184 pounds - took individual titles while several others fared well.
At 133 pounds, Slaton defeated fellow Hokie Anton Prater in the championship match to take the title. The freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, went 4-0 while Prater, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., went 4-1.
At 141 pounds, freshman Dan LeClere went 1-2 on the day.
At 165 pounds, freshman T.H. Leet went 5-1 on the day to take third place.
At 174 pounds, Borschel, a freshman from Marion, Iowa, went 4-0 to capture his second open title this fall. He won the 20&Under Division at the Kaufman-Brand Open last weekend.
At 184, Borja won his second title of the fall by going 4-0. The senior from Bowmansville, Pa., also won the West Virginia Open and placed third at the Kaufman-Brand Open.
At 197 pounds, freshman Matt Woods went 1-2.
At heavyweight, freshman Mark Logan went 0-2.
Meanwhile, at the Journeyman/Brute Northeast Collegiate Duals in Guilderland Center, N.Y., the Hokies went 0-4 in dual meets, falling to No. 4 Minnesota, No. 13 Central Michigan, American and Division-II power Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Team scores and individual bout results have still yet to be sent to any of the schools from the tournament director as of Sunday night, so no further information is available.
Tech (0-4) will break for the upcoming exams before returning to action on Sunday, Dec. 18 in a dual match against Northern Iowa at 2 p.m., in the Hokies' home opener.
