Tar Heels Victorious at Rumble
UNC downs Tech, 31-9

RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Tech wrestling team fell to the University of North Carolina, 31-9, Thursday night at St. Christopher's High School in Atlantic Coast Conference action. The two teams were battling at the neutral site as part of the fourth annual Rumble on the River.

The match started off at 125 where Tech's Justin Staylor picked up a forfeit win to give Tech a 6-0 lead. At 133 pounds, UNC's Jared Royer picked up a 5-2 decision over Sheridan Moran.

At 141 pounds, UNC's Vincent Ramirez used two takedowns and held off 16th-ranked David Hoffman to pick up a 5-3 upset victory. At 149 pounds, UNC's Chris Ramos pinned Joe Thompson at the 1:44 mark to give the Tar Heels a 12-6 lead. At 157 pounds, Carolina's Brian Baglio picked up a 12-2 major decision over Dave Kiley before UNC pushed its lead to 13 points when Garrett Atkinson beat Tucker Michels, 3-0, at 165 pounds.

At 174 pounds, Alex Maciag beat Tech's Steve Ratley 6-3 and then Justin Dobies picked up a 10-4 decision over Tech's Mark Czarny at 184 pounds. UNC picked up six team points at 197 pounds when the Hokies forfeited.

Moving to the last match, coming at heavyweight, Tech's Mike Faust, ranked ninth in the country, beat 12th-ranked Spencer Nadolsky 4-2 in the second tiebreaker. After the regulation was tied at 1-1, neither scored in the first overtime, sending it further into the night. The second overtime saw each man pick up an escape, but Nadolsky led with one second of riding time. In the second sudden victory, neither man scored, sending it to the second tiebreaker. There, each man again picked up an escape, but Faust held on for two more seconds of riding time to pick up the win on criteria.

Tech steps out of conference action Saturday when it returns to Cassell Coliseum for a 2 p.m., match against an 8-8 Ohio University squad. Doors open at 1 p.m., when head coach Tom Brands' Olympic gold medal will be on display for fans to see, try on and take pictures with.
