BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Wednesday that Tom Brands has accepted the position of head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa.
"We thank Tom for his dedication to Virginia Tech and wish him well in his future endeavors at the University of Iowa," said Jim Weaver, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics.
In two years as the head coach of the Hokies, Brands posted a dual-meet record of 17-20, going 16-4 in his first season. That year, his team went 5-0 in the ACC, winning the dual meet championship, as five wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships. This past year, he coached seniors David Hoffman and Mike Faust to All-America status at the NCAA Championships as the Hokies finished 29th in the country.
Brands is a 1992 graduate of the University of Iowa, where he won three national titles.
A review concerning the future leadership and direction of Virginia Tech's program will immediately ensue.
