Three take titles at ESU Open
Epperly, Spellman, Gardner victorious

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Virginia Tech wrestling team wrapped up competition Saturday night at the East Stroudsburg Open with three Hokies winning their respective weight classes, and three others placing in the top three.

Matt Epperly (165 pounds), Tommy Spellman (184 pounds) and Cody Gardner (285 pounds) each picked up wins in their respective weight classes, while Anthony Trongone (165 pounds) and David Marone (285 pounds) took second in theirs, and Matt Ryan placed third at 184 pounds, wrestling unattached.

At 165 pounds, Epperly downed Alex Enriquez of Princeton, 4-3, before defeating Phil Santee of Millersville, 14-2. Epperly proceeded to beat Harvard's Matthew Button, before taking down his teammate Trongone, 3-2, for the title. Epperly is now 5-0 on the year.

Trongone, wrestling unattached, reached the title match by beating Duke's Willy Mello, 3-1, Princeton's Mike Alvarez, 11-5, John Mangini of Lock Haven, 6-1, Pittsburgh's Andy Vaughan, 10-5, and Justin Ransom of Carson-Newman, 8-3, before falling to Epperly in the finals.

At 184 pounds, Spellman picked up the title by defeating five opponents. He opened the day with a 4-0 victory over Brandon Boyer of West Virginia, and then beat Jack Decker of Penn State, 6-5. He then beat Cam Simaz of Hicks Scrappin, 9-0, and his teammate Ryan, 12-2, before pinning Duke's John Barone at the 5:00 mark to win his bracket.

Ryan opened the day beating Nate Rock, 5-0, and winning by default over Bob Laraway of Middlesex County College to advance and face David Williams of ESU. Ryan beat Williams, 5-4, and Mike Ward of Penn State, 4-1, before falling to Spellman in the semi-finals. He went on to beat Mike Corcetti of Pitt-Johnstown, 8-4, in the consolations, for third place.

At 285 pounds, Gardner made his much-anticipated collegiate debut and went 5-0 on the day. He took the title by beating teammate Marone, 2-1, in the finals. Gardner defeated Drew Mackay of Delaware Valley College, 11-3, to open the day, before pinning Arthur Brown of Carson-Newman at the 3:22 mark. He then beat Brenden Herlihy of Penn State, 5-1, before knocking off ESU's Chris Birchler 4-3 in the tiebreaker to reach the finals.

Marone went 4-1 on the day to run his collegiate record to 5-1. He opened with a 17-2 technical fall over Shane Tobin and then pinned Kyle Bilquist at the 1:51 mark. He then beat Harry Turner 10-1 before winning 3-1 over Scott Clark to reach the finals.

Most of the consolation wrestlebacks were cancelled early on, limiting the number of matches a lot of competitors had.
