Terps down Hokies, 33-8, on the mat
Epperly picks up technical fall for Tech
January 19, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 21st-ranked Maryland wrestling team knocked off Virginia Tech, 33-8, Saturday afternoon at the Comcast Pavilion. The win was the sixth in a row for the Terps and moved them to 10-3 overall, 2-0 in the ACC while the Hokies fell to 4-4, 0-1 in the conference.

The match started at 133 pounds where Maryland's Steven Bell picked up four team points with a 13-5 major decision over Nick Murray. At 141 pounds, Chris Diaz picked up his first ACC win with an 8-4 decision over Jon Kohler. Matt Rosen and Andre Johnson suffered defeats at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, before Matt Epperly put on a dominating show at 165 pounds in picking up a 16-0 technical fall of Clint Stout 40 seconds into the third period.

The match at 174 pounds was the featured bout as Maryland's Mike Letts came in ranked ninth while Tech's Eric Decker was ranked 20th. The match didn't live up to the hype as Letts picked up an easy 9-1 major decision over Decker. Tommy Spellman hung tough at 184 pounds, but dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 18 Josh Haines.

Seventh-ranked Hudson Taylor pinned Tech's Kevin O'Connor at 197 pounds and freshman David Marone suffered another close loss at heavyweight, this time a 3-2 decision to Patrick Gilmore. The match ended at 125 pounds with Maryland's Brendan Byrne picking up a 9-1 major decision over Justin Staylor.

Tech will return to Cassell Coliseum for an ACC match against North Carolina next Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. The team will then hop on a bus and head to Richmond for a pair of Sunday matches as part of the annual Rumble on the River. Tech will take on in-state rival Virginia at 1 p.m., followed by a 3 o'clock match against VMI. The event will be held at Deep Run High School.
