Hokies fall to Monarchs
Marone, Rosen, Spellman pick up wins

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech wrestling team wrapped up its regular season with a 36-9 loss to 19th-ranked Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. Three Hokies - David MaroneMatt Rosen and Tommy Spellman - all recorded individual wins in the match.

Things got started at 197 pounds where David Mendoza of ODU beat D.J. Bruce 8-3.

Marone then picked up his second win of the season over Andy Totusek at heavyweight. In the first period, Marone picked up a takedown and then got an escape and two more takedowns in the second period and a point for riding time to pick up the 8-3 win.

The Monarchs then went on a run to take a big lead. At 125 pounds, 10th-ranked James Nicholson picked up an 11-2 major decision over Tech's Justin Staylor before 17th-ranked Kyle Hutter beat Jared Jones 4-3 at 133 pounds.

At 141 pounds, Ryan Williams of ODU beat Chris Diaz, 9-5 and Kaylen Baxter of ODU picked up a 21-9 major decision over Tech's Nick Murray at 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, Tech's Matt Rosen recorded a 7-4 decision over Dan Rivera at 157 pounds. The two were tied 3-3 after one period and then picked up an escape in the second stanza. In the third, Rivera got an escape but Rosen got a takedown and a point for riding time.

Tech then forfeited at 165 pounds and then Nick Pullano beat Eddie Baughan, 10-6, at 174 pounds.

The final match saw Spellman beat Jesse Strawn, 5-4. Strawn got the first takedown before Spellman tied it up with a takedown in the second. Strawn got a reversal in the third period to take a 4-2 lead, but Spellman got an escape and a takedown late to win 5-4.

ODU improves to 17-3 on the season while the Hokies fall to 7-9. Tech will be back in action in March, wrestling at the ACC Championships at College Park, Md.
