WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Virginia Tech wrestling team wrapped up regular season competition Sunday with a 25-19 loss to American at Bender Arena. Even though both teams each won five matches, American earned bonus points in four of five wins, including three pins to lead the way.
The bout got off to a good start for Tech at 184 pounds as Angelo Malvestuto stepped in for an injured John Dickson and came up with a 10-3 for the Hokies. But the Eagles picked up pins in the next two matches and then got a tiebreaker victory at 125 pounds to break it open.
Devin Carter, now ranked sixth in the country, cut into the lead with a 19-4 technical fall over Corey Borshoff at 133 pounds, but American got its third pin of the day in the next weight class in questionable fashion to all but seal the outcome. Sixteenth-ranked Matt Mariacher was awarded the fall over No. 20 Zach Neibert at 141 pounds to make it 21-8 at that point.
Nick Brascetta then came through for Tech at 149 pounds with an 8-4 win. Eighth-ranked Pete Yates took care of business at 165 pounds, posting a 20-5 technical fall of his own and Chris Moon ended things on a positive note with an 11-6 win at 174 pounds, but the three pins proved to be the difference as the Hokies fell to the Eagles.
“We had a questionable call go against us at 141 pounds, and a lack of effort at 125 and 197 pounds cost us this match,” Tech coach Kevin Dresser said. “Zach can’t let the referee into the match like that.”
The match wraps up the regular season for the Hokies, who finished 8-6. Their next action will be at the ACC Championships, March 3 at Chapel Hill, N.C.
