BLACKSBURG - Coming off a back-to-back ACC titles and top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, Virginia Tech wrestling coach Kevin Dresser has released the team’s 2014-15 schedule, one that will test the Hokies once again as they continue to build upon the team’s recent success.
The Hokies will open the season on Nov. 8, taking on Newberry College in a dual match inside Cassell Coliseum. The next day, Tech will hold its annual Hokie Open tournament, but this year it is scheduled to be held in Rector Field House in Blacksburg. The tournament has grown into one of the top early season events in the region and attracts competitors from all over the country.
On Nov. 16, Tech will host Gardner-Webb and North Dakota State in a tri meet at Cassell Coliseum and will then take on national power Ohio State a week later in Blacksburg.
In December, the Hokies will open at the Las Vegas Invite and will then travel to three-time defending national champion Penn State for a dual meet on Dec. 19 as part of a home-and-home series. The Nittany Lions will return to Blacksburg in 2015-16. The Hokies will end the calendar year by competing in the Midlands Championships.
Tech opens 2015 by competing in the Virginia Duals in Hampton and then get down to the bulk of its dual meet schedule. The squad will head to west to take on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 16 and then will trek to Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 18 for a match against Iowa State.
Upon returning from Iowa, the Hokies will compete in five-straight ACC matches, four of which will take place in Blacksburg. The Hokies will travel to Chapel Hill to take on UNC on Jan. 31 and then return home to take on Virginia (Feb. 1), Pittsburgh (Feb. 6), NC State (Feb. 8) and Duke (Feb. 14). A trip to Hempstead, N.Y., to face Hofstra on Feb. 22 concludes the regular season.
The 2015 ACC Championships will be held on Sunday, March 8 in Pittsburgh as the Hokies look to defend their back-to-back titles, and the NCAA Championships will be held March 19-21 in St. Louis.
All dates, times and even locations are tentative until the ACC releases the men’s and women’s basketball schedules later this summer.
