Two Hokies reach the podium at University Nationals

BLACKSBURG - Rising redshirt freshmen Andrew Dunn and Kyle Norstrem both earned eighth place finishes at the UWW University Nationals in Akron, Ohio on Sunday. Dunn went 4-3 at 125 kg and reached the quarterfinals of the main bracket while Norstrem went 5-2 on the backside of the bracket to reach the podium at 57 kg.

Dunn, a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania native, rattled off three-consecutive wins in the main bracket before falling the quarters. After his first win, Dunn pinned Charles Miller of Hoosier Wrestling Club at 5:43 and then claimed a 4-2 decision over the Minnesota Storm’s Rylee Streifl.

After falling in the first round, Norstrem battled back to win four-straight bouts by technical fall and a criteria win, 15-15, in the final 16 of the consolations.

Redshirt senior Dennis Gustafson and redshirt junior Ryan Blees posted four wins apiece.

Three Hokies will be in action this upcoming weekend at the U.S. Junior and Senior World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska from June 9-10. Rising redshirt sophomore David McFadden will compete in the junior field while 2017 graduate Ty Walz and assistant coach Frank Molinaro will wrestle for spots on the U.S. senior world team.
