    Boston vs. Santa Clara
    Postgame Comments

Opening comments from Santa Clara coach Jerry Smith
I’m very proud of our team today. I thought we worked very hard and we said going into the game, we needed to get two goals today and I’m happy to get the second goal for sure. Boston is about as tough a team we’ve played in a long time, quite honestly. Defensively, I really respected how hard they worked, how tough they were, how much effort they put out in the game.

There wasn’t a coincidence that they led the country in defended, one of the best defenses in the country – only allowed seven goals all year. For us to get two on them today, I don’t know when they’ve given up two before today, but giving up seven probably not a lot. My hats off to Boston, it was a great season for them. I’m sure they are disappointed. Our team, we are very happy to be advancing. It will be a tough game on Sunday, but we think we’ve got a shot on Sunday. Very happy to score a goal early, that kind of settled our nerves a little bit.

Santa Clara senior Morgan Marlborough on scoring the game winner
Obviously, when you are on the sidelines you ‘re looking at what you can do better, and I thought we were going at them, going at them, but we hadn’t had the opportunity to get that goal and put it in. Jerry (Smith) told me right before he put me in, ‘Go get the game winner.” And all I was thinking about was that we had to finish our chances. We’re getting all these chances, but we can’t put it in the back of the net. So, that’s what I was really focusing on when I went back on the field.

So, Sofia Huerta was dribbling on the right side of the field and she took a really powerful shot and the goalkeeper couldn’t hold on to it, and I was just there for the rebound and I just tapped it in.

Smith on the game-winning goal …
Yesterday in our training we focused on rebounds. We talked about getting our shots on goal. We looked at box scores from the season and we thought a team similar to ours was Penn State. They beat Boston 1-0 and had 14 shots in the game, but only three were on goal. So, what we talked about was that we weren’t going to get a lot of shots in this game, so we need to get them on goal and we have to follow the rebound every time, because you’re not going to get a lot of chances with this team. And so we focused on getting shots on goal and getting the rebounds and that’s exactly how we scored the game winner today. So, you can’t underestimate the little things like getting rebounds and Morgan did that for us.
