Opening comments from Virginia Tech coach Chugger Adair
I’m very pleased with the result tonight. It was a very tough match for us. West Virginia had a very good game plan and they were very difficult to breakdown. I think they did a very good job of making it difficult to play. We started slow, but the second half we came out alive and created some chances. I think the first half was like 45 minutes of both teams just feeling each other out trying to figure out the different style and how to play. We were a lot urgent in the attack in the second half and I was pleased with that. And we were solid in the back tonight, so I’m happy.

How frustrating was the first half as your team recorded just three shots?
It was definitely frustrating because, I think they clogged a lot of space and were trying to make it difficult on us. They were very defensive minded, as far as their game plan, so it was difficult for us to play. I think we wasted a lot of opportunities because we got frustrated and just played balls over the top. I think we should have played and possessed a little bit more and tried to break them down. We talked about have some urgency in the attacking third and the girls did a good job.

What are your thoughts on the game-winning goal?
The goal, if you look at it, was a tremendous run. Katie Yensen made did a good job finding space here and she was able to turn her player into an overlapping Taylor Antolino, as our right back to get to the end line to create the goal for Murielle Tiernan to score was tremendous. It was a good combination play, a good team goal.

Junior Katie Yenson on the game winner
I didn’t see Taylor at first, but then I heard her call for it and I turned back and slipped her a ball. But it was a great run. She ran really really hard and it was good to have an option out wide. Then she was able to make it to the end line and serve a great ball.

Freshman Murielle Tiernan on her game winner
Obviously, it feels great, but it really wasn’t anything, it was just put on my foot and it bounced in. It was all Taylor making a great pass and I just found space.
