NCAA Blacksburg Regional Third Round
November 24, 2013
Santa Clara at Virginia Tech
Opening remarks from Virginia Tech coach Chugger Adair
I’m extremely happy and pleased with the result. We showed our toughness today in the match. I think Santa Clara was a very good team and had a very good game plan and created a number of good chances. I think we defended well at times and when we didn’t Dayle (Colpitts) stepped up and made some very good saves for us and kept us in the game. The first half, if I’m looking at it, a little more of the chances went to Santa Clara. I think they were a little bit sharper in the first half. In the second half, we made some adjustments and Murielle (Tiernan) scored a great goal to put us up. But, we were creating chances and we were much better in the start of the second half. Santa Clara showed its class and ability scoring a very good goal to tie it and the game just continued to go either way. It was a tough game and could have went either way, and with some of our defensive efforts and Dayle’s ability today kept the game level and got us to PKs and won it in PKs for us. Our girls did a great job and I’m really pleased with the result. As a coach, you never know when you go to PKs what’s going to happen and this was a first time for our program and the girls stepped up well.
… on the next match, facing Duke in the Elite Eight
Duke is a familiar foe. I think they are a very good side. They’ve been peaking at the right time. They got into the tournament at about a .500 record. But they’ve had a slew of injuries throughout the year and have battled through issues with different playing systems and we drew them at their place 1-1. They are very athletic. They are very well-balanced and it will be a very tough test for us Friday. They are peaking at the right moment.
Virginia Tech senior Dayle Colpitts on her approach coming into the game
I felt very prepared. We had some good training sessions coming in. The coaches always do a great job with scouting reports and I think, myself and the backline were really excited for the challenge more than anything. I think everyone stepped up and did their job for the most part today.
…on making the Elite Eight as a senior
It means a lot to me. I couldn’t have asked for a better season thus far. We’ve all come together and performed under pressure when it’s really mattered. I couldn’t be happier and, I don’t think any of us are tired of playing yet, we want to keep this thing going as long as we can.
Virginia Tech freshman Murielle Tiernan on her goal to put Tech up 1-0
I got the ball at my feet and I had space to turn, so, I turned and I was trying to find someone to slip through and then I saw the defenders kind of, no one was stepping towards me, so I just hit it and it worked out nice.
… on getting to penalty kicks
We’ve practiced penalty kicks like every practice since the postseason started. So, we felt really prepared and I think everyone was confident in everyone.
