Women's Soccer Falls In Season Opener
Hokies fall, 3-2, at UNC Charlotte
August 25, 2000 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team opened its 2000 season by dropping a 3-2 decision to UNC Charlotte on Friday at Transamerica Field. Virginia Tech opened the scoring only 1:28 into the match when Victoria Sarfo-Kantanka picked up a loose ball on the right side and found the back of the net behind Charlotte goalkeeper Jennifer Howell. UNCC's Meredith Mayo equalized the scoring 6:50 before halftime. Neither team could muster a goal in the second half until a Katie Wilson shot deflected off the leg of Charlotte defender Mikel Casey as the ball rolled past Howell to put the Hokies up 2-1 on an own goal with only 12:27 remaining. Less than two minutes later, at 79:31, sophomore Jennie Leeder raced through the Hokie defense and fired a bullet past Virginia Tech goalkeeper Katie Hancock to tie the score once again. At 83:24, 1999 Conference USA Player of the Year and senior Jill Currie threaded the defense to find freshman forward Tiffany Ross and she capitalized on a shot across the goal mouth past the outstretched arms of the Virginia Tech goalkeeper Hancock to seal the victory. The Hokies (0-1) return to action Sunday, hosting Seton Hall at 1 p.m. at the Johnson/Miller Soccer Complex.
