Hokies Drop Season Opener
Kathy Holdsworth's two goals not enough as Hokies fall 4-2 at George Mason
August 30, 2003

FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior Kathy Holdsworth (Sarasota, Fla.) scored a pair of goals, but that wasn't enough offense as the Virginia Tech women's soccer team dropped a 4-2 match at George Mason Saturday night in the Hokies' season opener.

Holdsworth did her part for the Hokies (0-1-0), under first-year head coach Kelly Cagle, but the Patriots (1-0-0) proved too much as they tacked on three second half goals after leading Virginia Tech just 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.

George Mason's Amy Sorenson put her team on top 1-0 at the 33:08 mark of the first half. She took a pass from Allison Cowan and nailed a 12-yard shot past Hokies' freshman keeper Mallory Soldner (Lanesville, Ind.), who made her collegiate debut in net for Virginia Tech. The teams went to the locker room with GMU holding the 1-0 lead, but the Hokies erased the deficit quickly in the first 10 minutes of the final half. Holdsworth netted her team's first goal at 55:08 after a pass from senior Nina Figueroa (Vienna, Va.).

The Patriots took control in the next eleven minutes as they netted two goals to push the lead to 4-2. Rachel Wiggins got an assist from Sarah Wilkinson and scored at 58:39, and then Wiggins returned the favor to Wilkinson, who scored at 66:04. Kristine Gray added the Patriot's fifth goal at 87:57.

Holdsworth then netted her second goal of the game and 13th of her career at 89:22 to close the scoring. Virginia Tech finished the match with a 15-10 shooting advantage and also generated seven corner kicks. The Hokies forced Patriot keeper Sarah Coughlin to be on her toes throughout the match, out shooting GMU 6-3 in the first half. Coughlin made seven saves, while Soldner collected five saves. Hokie sophomore Kjersti Trout (Stafford, Va.) and Holdsworth led the offense as Holdsworth netted five shots, while Trout added four. The Hokies return home Tuesday, Sept. 2 to host American at 7 p.m.
