Hokies Shutout Liberty
Defense plays strong in Hokies first win.

BLACKSBURG, VA. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team shutout the Liberty Flames, 1-0, Friday. Tech freshman Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) scored the only goal of the contest. The goal came at the 55:28 mark in the second half. Junior Victoria Sarfo-Kantanka (Glen Allen, Va.) assisted Barnhart on the goal.

Both freshmen goalies in the match played strong. Virginia Tech's Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) finished the game with seven saves, five of them coming in the first half. Liberty's freshman goalkeeper, Amy Moxley recorded 12 saves in the contest. Both goalkeepers played the entire 90 minutes.

Tech totaled 21 shots, 10 corners and 12 fouls. Liberty produced nine shots, two corners and five fouls.

The win is the first for the Hokies' women soccer team this year and puts the Hokies at 1-2 this season. Liberty drops to 0-2 after losing its second straight 0-1 decision. Liberty lost to Sonoma State in the previous game, 0-1.

The Hokies next game is against Kent State on Sunday at 1p.m.
