Tech Falls to Miami in BIG EAST Opener

MIAMI, Fla. - The Virginia Tech women's team soccer dropped a close match, 2-1, to the University of Miami Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST opener for both teams. With the lost, the Hokies fall to 0-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference, while Miami improved to 4-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST.

Miami opened the scoring on a goal by Lisa Gomez off a penalty kick at the 39:49 mark of the first half to give the Hurricanes 1-0 lead.

Jessica Myers (Richmond, Va.) knotted the game up with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute on her first goal of the season.

The game remained tied for about twelve minutes until Britney Butcher scored the game-winning goal for the Hurricanes. Her goal came off an assist from Lindsey Yach at the 76:18 mark of the second half.

Natasha Dirda (McKees Rocks, Pa.) played the entire game in goal for the Hokies and recorded five saves while allowing both goals.

After dropping both games in the Miami Invitational Tournament this weekend, the Hokies looks to rebound against nationally ranked James Madison on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The Dukes, ranked No. 25 in the Soccer Buzz Magazine poll, and the Hokies are set to kickoff at 7 p.m. in Harrisonburg.
