Liberty 0, VT 5
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Kjersti Trout (Stafford, Va.) tallied a natural hat-trick in the first half and finished the match with four goals leading the Virginia Tech women's soccer team to its first victory of the season. With the 5-0 shutout of Liberty, Tech improves to 1-6-1 on the year as the Lady Flames fall to 2-5-1 overall.
Trout accomplished what no other women's soccer player at Virginia Tech had achieved in the program's nine year history by scoring four goals in a game. The previous record of three goals in a match was held by five different players, most recently achieved by Wendy Kotwas during the 1999 season, also versus Liberty.
Trout scored her first goal of the afternoon in the 15th minute of the match on a cross by junior Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio). Just two minutes later Trout and Barnhart connected once again increasing the Hokies' advantage to 2-0.
With only 1:19 remaining in the first half, Trout completed the natural hat-trick scoring her third goal of the game, giving Tech a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Trout netted her record breaking goal in the 53rd minute of the match with an unassisted goal, her fifth of the season.
Sophomore Sarah Kammerer (Moon Township, Pa.) added the finishing touches for the Hokies with a header off a direct kick by Kristel Jacobson (Hampton, N.H.) in the 63rd minute.
The Hokies defense limited the Lady Flames to only five shots in the
game with only two shots on goal. Tech goalkeepers Katie Hancock and
Natasha Dirda made one save apiece and combined for the shutout.
Tech will return to action on Sunday with a BIG EAST match at Pittsburgh. The Hokies and Panthers kick off at 1 p.m. at Founders Field.
