September 28, 2003

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Senior Emily Barnhart set the Virginia Tech women's soccer career goal record with her 20th and 21st on Sunday, but the visiting Connecticut Huskies (Uconn), ranked 10th in the nation, were too much in the second half as they handed the host Hokies a 5-3 BIG EAST defeat.

Barnhart, a native of Columbus, Ohio, gave her team a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals at 14:31 and 19:26, the latter of which gave her the career goals record. Barnhart now owns Hokie career records for goals (21), assists (13), points (55) and shots. However, the Huskies victimized the Hokies with four second half goals before Virginia Tech added the final goal. The Hokies fell to 5-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division. UConn improved to 5-2-2 and 1-1-0 in the division.

Barnahart scored her first goal, and fifth of the season, in the 14th minute to give the Hokies the quick lead. Just five minutes later, she headed in a shot after senior Jessica Myers' corner kick. Megan Schnur scored a goal for Uconn at 40:50, and the teams went to halftime with Virginia Tech leading 2-1.

It didn't take long for UConn to gain control of the match. Zahra Jalalian scored a goal at 46:50 to tie the match, then Kristin Grazcyk netted a goal at 47:27 to give the Hueskies the lead. Graczyk added another score, and Jessica Gjertsen scored for Uconn as they built a 5-2 lead.

The Hokies put together a rally, however, as senior Kathy Holdsworth notched her fifth goal of the season at 76:30, after Uconn had swapped goalkeepers. Ashley Stoutland tallied her first assist of the season on the play. For the match, Schnur and Gjertsen each tallied a goal and a pair of assists, while Graczyk added two goals and an assist.

The Hokies generated 16 shots, with nine of them on-goal. Holdsworth and Barnhart each had four shots. Myer's assist, her fourth of the year, moved her into fourth place in career assists with nine. She also stands in fourth place in career points with 41.

The Hokies' next action is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2 at Liberty University. Kickoff in Lynchburg is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
