PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team earned its second straight victory with a 2-0 shutout over Pittsburgh in a cross-divisional BIG EAST match Sunday afternoon. With the win, Tech improves to 2-6-1 on the year, while the Panthers fall to 3-8-0 overall.

Sophomores Natasha Dirda (McKees Rocks, Pa.) and Sarah Kammerer (Moon Township, Pa.), both from the greater-Pittsburgh area, made the most of their homecoming. Dirda recorded her first career shutout in goal for the Hokies with seven saves, earning her first victory as a collegian.

Kammerer came off the bench to seal the victory in the 83rd minute of play with the Hokies' second goal of the afternoon. Kammerer gathered a pass from junior Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) and drilled a shot into the lower left of the net for her second goal in as many games. With the assist, Barnhart now ranks third on Tech's all-time assist leader board.

In the 60th minute, Barnhart scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on an assist by junior Amy Rappaport (Columbia, Md.).

Despite the Panthers' 6-0 advantage on corner kicks, Pittsburgh could not solve the Hokies' defense as Tech recorded its second consecutive shutout of the week.

Since the match featured Mid-Atlantic Division member Pittsburgh and the Hokies, a Northeast Division member, the game does not affect either teams' BIG EAST record.

The Hokies will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to South Orange, N.J., for a BIG EAST match against the Seton Hall Pirates. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
