VT 0 - William & Mary 4
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team's early season struggles continued on Wednesday night as William & Mary shutout the Hokies, 4-0, in a non-conference match played at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va. Tech, playing its toughest schedule in the program's 10-year history, falls to 0-2 on the year as William & Mary improves to 2-0.
The Tribe, an overwhelming favorite to capture the 2002 Colonial Athletic Association championship, had four different players score. Tara Flint (one goal, one assist), and Taline Tahmassian, (two assists) led William & Mary's offensive attack.
Dominating the final statistics, the Tribe outshot Tech 12-4, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hokies were playing in their first match since head coach Sam Okpodu announced his resignation to accept a position as the chief coach of Nigeria's senior women's national team.
Jerry Cheynet, the interim head coach, will direct the Hokies for the remainder of the 2002 fall season.
Tech will be back in action this weekend in a tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The Hokies will face East Carolina on Friday, Sept. 6, followed by a match on Sunday, Sept. 8, against the host Charlotte 49ers.
