Virginia Tech Knocks Off Miami University
Hokies push record above .500
September 5, 2003

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team improved to 2-1 on the young season with a 2-0 win at Miami (Ohio) University Friday. The Hokies scored a goal in each half and out shot the Redhawks 15-11.

Freshman Kani Brownlee got the Hokies on the board quickly. Just eight minutes into the match, Brownlee slammed a shot past Redhawk keeper Leigh Terry for her first career goal as a Hokie. Brownlee capitalized on the shot after a Redhawk turnover in front of their own net.

Senior Jessica Myers, who scored two goals in the win over American on Tuesday night, notched her third score of the year at 48:59 to give her team a 2-0 lead they would nurse until the final horn. Sophomore Shannon Poach was credited with her first assist of 2003 on the scoring play.

TheHokie defense was superb in its shutout effort. Freshman Mallory Soldner made four saves, including a diving save on a Redhawk breakaway shot. Soldner also stopped a redirected shot late in the game to preserve her first career shutout.

The Hokies continue a two-match road trip with a non-conference match at Marshall University Sunday at 1 p.m.
