VT 1, Charlotte 3
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team's struggles continued as the Hokies fell to the Charlotte 49ers, 3-1, in the final game of the Charlotte Classic. The victory allowed Charlotte to capture the title for the weekend tournament held in Charlotte, N.C., at Transamerica Field. With the loss, Tech falls to 0-3-1 on the year as Charlotte improves to a perfect 3-0.
The Hokies grabbed hold of a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of play when junior Kathy Holdsworth (Sarasota, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick. The penalty kick came as result of a Charlotte handball violation in the penalty box. Tech would hold Charlotte scoreless for the remainder of the first half and entered intermission with a one-goal advantage.
Tides turned in the second half as the 49ers offense exploded for three goals. Charlotte's Kim Moore opened the scoring in the 64th minute and tied the game at 1-1 on a header off a 49er corner kick.
In the 68th minute Lindsay Duncan netted the game-winning goal from three yards out on an assist from Shannon Roberto.
Courtney Crandell, the tournament MVP, added the final exclamation point to the scoreboard in the 77th minute sealing the 3-1 victory for Charlotte.
On a positive note for the Hokies, Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) and Holdsworth garnered All-Tournament honors. Barnhart scored one goal in Tech's 2-2 tie with East Carolina in the tournament opener while Holdsworth finished the tournament with one goal and one assist.
Tech will return home and prepare for the Miami Invitational hosted by the University of Miami next weekend. The Hokies will open the tournament against nationally ranked Florida State on Friday, Sept. 13, and then play the Hurricanes on Sunday, Sept. 15, in Tech's first BIG EAST divisional match of the 2002 season.
