September 9, 2001

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts 3-1 Sunday afternoon in its second and final game of the adidas/Spartan Classic in Greensboro, N.C.

The Hokies grabbed an early lead when senior Joy Nsubuga (Hollysprings, N.C.) took a pass from sophomore Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) and beat the Spartan keeper. The goal came at the 9:01 mark in the match and the assist was credited to Barnhart. Tech would go up 2-0 in the first half when senior Wendy Kotwas (Conesus, N.Y.) scored at the 26:44 mark. Kotwas scored on a long shot that beat the keeper high. There was no assist on the goal.

Tech would go up 3-0 at the 64:40 mark when senior Kim Wyckoff (Springfield, Va.) won a 50/50 ball in the box and scored. There was no assist on the play. The Catamounts cut into the lead at the 72:19 mark when Jordan Howell scored off of a loose ball on a throw in, but it was too late for Western Carolina to stage a come back.

Sophomore Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) played the majority of minutes in goal for Tech. She collected four saves in her 68:08 minutes of shutout soccer. Junior Kristen Kirsch (Orlando, Fla.) saw her first action of the year. She produced two saves while in net.

The win ups the Hokies' record to 2-1-1 on the year and drops Western Carolina to 3-2. The Hokies are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to battle the Liberty Flames. The match is set to begin at 6:00.
