Women's Soccer Wins Third in a Row
Nsubuga scores in closing minutes to seal victory

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team won their third straight match with the 2-1 defeat of the Radford Highlanders Wednesday night in Radford, Va. Joy Nsubuga (Hollysprings, N.C.) scored with three minutes remaining in the match to give the Hokies the win.

After a scoreless first half, Radford jumped out to a one goal advantage when Sarah Wicichowski collected a deflected shot off the cross bar and knocked it into the goal. The goal came at the 49:14 mark in the match and was assisted by Debbie Leach and Kelly Bertwell.

The Hokies would tie the match up when they were awarded a penalty kick after Carmen Chestnut (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was dragged down in the box. Wendy Kotwas (Conesus, N.Y.) took the penalty kick and beat the Radford goalkeeper with a shot into the lower left corner. The goal came at the 77:57 mark.

Tech would continue to roll in the closing minutes and would eventually take the lead in the match. Nsubuga, seeing her first action of the night, took a shot 20-yards out that floated past the goalkeeper to seal Tech's third staight win. The goal was scored at the 87:00 minute mark and was unassisted.

Again Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) was sound in goal for Tech. Hancock collected two saves on six Radford shots and allowed the single goal. Brandi Malizia made five saves in the match on 22 Hokie shots. Tech out shot the Highlanders 22-6.

The win ups the Hokies' record to 6-4-2 on the year and drops Radford to 4-7-3 overall. Tech is back in action Friday when they take on the Providence Friars in Providence, R.I. The match is set for a 3 p.m. start time.
