Women's Soccer Falls to Providence
Sarfo-Kantanka scores in loss

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team fell to the Providence Friars Friday afternoon by a score of 3-1. Victoria Sarfo-Kantanka (Richmond, Va.) scored her first goal of the season in the loss.

Providence jumped out to a two goal lead early in the match when Kyle McAuley and Kate Kearney scored goals less than three-minutes apart. McAuley scored off of a pass from Caitlyn Welsh at the 15:30 mark. Welsh was credited with an assist on the play. Kearney upped the Friar lead to two goals when she scored at the 18:13 mark. Kristin Gardner was credited with an assist on the second goal.

Providence took a three goal advantage into the half when Maura Robertson scored at the 38:34 mark. The goal was unassisted.

The Hokies went on to score at the 69:53 mark. Sarfo-Kantanka blasted a shot from 30-yards out that beat the goalkeeper. The goal was Sarfo-Kantanka's first of the season. Jessica Myers (Richmond, Va.) was credited with an assist, also her first of the year, on the play.

Tech goalkeeper Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) played the entire match in goal for the Hokies, stopping five out of the Friars' 15 shots. Caroline Haines also played the entire match for Providence. She produced six saves on 19 Tech shots.

The loss drops the Hokies to 6-5-2 on the year and 0-2 in the BIG EAST. The Friars improve its overall record to 5-5-1 and their conference record to 1-5-1. Tech is back in action Sunday when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on the Boston College Eagles at 12 p.m.
