Mallory Soldner posts fourth career shutout
October 12, 2003

NORFOLK, Va. - Behind goals from senior Emily Barnhart and junior Ryan Johnson and another stellar day from keeper Mallory Soldner, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team shutout host Old Dominion, 2-0, on Sunday.

The Hokies, who also shutout Radford on the road Wednesday, moved above .500 in road matches this season at 5-4-0. Overall, the Hokies upped their record to 8-6-0, while the Monarchs dipped to 1-6-3.

Soldner was again a force in net for Virginia Tech. Two days after making eight saves against Miami, Soldner stopped five Monarch attempts to record her fourth shutout of the year. The Hokies had just six shots themselves, but they took advantage of their opportunities and finished their attacking efforts during this match.

Just 58 seconds into the match, Johnson got a pass from freshman Heather Pearson and dribbled her way into scoring position for her first goal of the season and fourth of her career. Pearson was credited with her first career assist on the scoring connection.

The Hokies added another goal at 52:02 when senior Emily Barnhart notched her team-leading ninth goal of the year and 24th of her career, adding to the record she already owns. It also allowed Barnhart to catch senior Jessica Myers for the team lead in points with 19.

Stephanie Miller suffered the loss for the Monarchs, making three saves. Kristen Bailey relieved her in the second half. Six different Hokies players had one shot apiece - all on-goal.

The Hokies return to action at home on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., when Georgetown visits for a BIG EAST non-standings match.
