October 15, 2003 THIS WEEK IN HOKIE WOMEN'S SOCCER: Thursday, Oct. 16 - Hokies host Georgetown University, 7 p.m., at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium Sunday, Oct. 19 - Hokies host Rutgers University, 1 p.m., at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium HOKIES WRAP UP HOME SCHEDULE: As the 2003 regular season comes to a close, the Hokies return home to host their final two matches at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium. Both matches this week are against non-division opponents, but the Hokies would still like to end the home season on a positive note. Sunday is also Senior Day. Katie Hancock, Jessica Myers, Nina Figueroa, Kathy Holdsworth, Blair Eason, Emily Barnhart and Jessica Russell will all be playing in their final home match as a Hokie. SERIES RESULTS: The Hokies trail 1-0-0 in the series with Georgetown. The only time the teams met was in 2001 when the Hoyas defeated the Hokies 3-0. The Hokies have played Rutgers twice (1995 and 2001) and lost twice. In 2001, the Scarlet Knights defeated the Hokies 1-0. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: * Georgetown is 4-9-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic Division. Shara McNeil leads the team with six goals and three assists. * Rutgers is 7-4-4 and 1-1-1 in the Mid-Atlantic Division. HOKIE TRACKS: Goalkeeper Mallory Soldner posted her third and fourth shutouts of the year last week, Holding off Radford and Old Dominion...Junior Ryan Johnson scored her first goal of the year in the Old Dominion win...The Hokies average 15.3 shots per match and allow 12.3 shots...Fourteen players have at least one point. A LOOK AT THE BIG EAST: The Virginia Tech Hokies are currently in sixth place in the Northeast Division at 1-3-0. Currently, Barnhart is first with 24, while Holdsworth needs just two to move into second past Victoria Sarfo-Kantanka. Myers needs just four more goals to move into third. The trio has scored 23 of the Hokies' 30 goals this season. A COUPLE OF FIRSTS: Junior Ryan Johnson and freshman Heather Pearson each recorded their first points of the year in the Old Dominion match. Johnson scored her first goal of the year and fourth of her career, and Pearson notched her first career assist. SOLDNER SOLID IN NET: Freshman keeper Mallory Soldner ranks second in the BIG EAST with 77 saves. She made 14 saves in the last three matches, including eight against Miami. UP NEXT: The Hokies wrap up the regular season with matches at Providence (Oct. 24) and Boston College (Oct. 26).
