Women's Soccer Battles to a Draw With Miami
Johnson scores second goal of the year in tie
October 19, 2001

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team played the Miami Hurricanes to a 1-1 tie Friday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hokies jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 18:43 mark when Ryan Johnson (Eagleville, Pa.) beat the Hurricanes' goalkeeper with a shot to the far post. The goal was scored off of a nice ball sent by Krista Dooley (Richmond, Va.) from 30-yards out. Both Dooley and Carmen Chestnut (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) were credited with assists. The goal was Johnson's second of the year.

Miami wasted no time responding to Tech's goal. The Hurricanes evened the score at one goal apiece when Alexis MacKenzie knocked in a ball at the 19:36 mark. MacKenzie scored when Anik Huffman flicked the ball to her and she chipped it in. Huffman was credited with an assist on the play.

Both keepers played exceptionally well in goal for their respective teams. The Hokies' Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) collected four saves off of 14 Miami shots. The Hurricanes' Rachel Elsby grabbed eight saves off of 19 Tech shots.

The tie puts Tech at 6-7-3 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference. Miami sits at 8-5-1 overall with a 3-2-1 record in the BIG EAST. The Hokies are back in action Sunday when they take on the St. John's Red Storm. The contest is the last home match for the women's soccer team and is set to begin at 2 p.m.
