Six seniors play final home match
October 19, 2003 BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team dropped its final home match of the 2003 season, 1-0, to the visiting Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Sunday. The Hokies fell to 8-8-0 with two divisional matches remaining, while Rutgers improved to 8-4-4. Sunday's match did not count in the BIG EAST standings. Six Hokie seniors - Katie Hancock, Jessica Russell, Jessica Myers, Emily Barnhart, Blair Eason and Kathy Holdsworth played in their final match in Blacksburg. Hancock got the start for the Hokies and played the first 18 minutes before giving way to freshman keeper Mallory Soldner. The Scarlet Knights netted the game-winning goal in the 64th minute on one of their four corner kicks. Zoe Avner served a ball to the front of the net, and Kim Brandao headed it in for the deciding score. The Hokies had their chances and put the pressure on in the waning minutes of the game. In the 81st minute, Rutgers' leading scorer Carli Lloyd was assessed a red card and ejected from the match. The Hokies then played a man-up for the remaining nine minutes but could not find an opening in the Scarlet Knight defense. The Hokies finished the match with seven shots, including three by Barnhart. Rutgers had nine shots. Hancock did not face a shot, while Soldner stopped three shots during her 73 minutes of playing time. The Hokies' final two matches are against divisional opponents Providence and Boston College. The Hokies travel to Providence next Friday, Oct. 24 for a 3 p.m. match.
