October 20, 2002

Box Score Syracuse 1, VT 2
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Kathy Holdsworth (Sarasota, Fla.) scored two goals, including one in overtime, to clinch the second consecutive BIG EAST victory for the Virginia Tech women's soccer team, a 2-1 win over Syracuse. With the victory, Tech moves to 5-8-1 on the year and 2-2-0 in conference play, while Syracuse drops to 2-10-2 overall, 0-5-1 in the BIG EAST.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with Syracuse holding a narrow 4-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Orangewomen had the best scoring opportunity of the half in the 34th minute. Syracuse's leading scorer Stephanie Sybert blasted an uncontested shot from 18 yards out but Tech goalkeeper Natasha Dirda (McKees Rocks, Pa.) came up with the save.

Just 46 seconds into the second half, Syracuse junior Anne-Marie Lapalme dribbled through the Tech defense and beat Dirda near-post for the first goal of the match. Despite being outshot by the Hokies 7-2 in the second stanza, Syracuse was able to hold on to its lead for much of the half.

With 14 minutes remaining, the Tech coaching staff moved Holdsworth from sweeper to forward in an attempt to generate more offense. The strategy paid off and the Hokies evened the score in the 86th minute on a header by Holdsworth. Classmate Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) served the ball from 20 yards out and Holdsworth headed the ball past the Syracuse goalkeeper for the equalizer, forcing overtime.

Holdsworth again came through for the Hokies in the extra session, scoring an unassisted goal in the 96th minute. With the goal, Tech was able to pick up its first overtime victory in four tries this season.

The home win for the Hokies came on Senior Day, as the women's soccer program honored the two members of the senior class, Krista Dooley (Richmond, Va.) and Courtney Graybill (Macungie, Pa.) at halftime.

Tech returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts BIG EAST opponent West Virginia on Moseley Field at 3 p.m.
