Connecticut 2, VT 1
STORRS, Conn. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team dropped a close match to BIG EAST opponent Connecticut, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Tech falls to 5-11-1 on the year and 2-4-0 in conference play, while the ninth-ranked Huskies move to 14-2-1 overall, 6-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Huskies were dominant in the first half, outshooting the Hokies 14-4. However, they were unable to score until the final two minutes of the half, when a pass up the middle from Kristine Lundberg enabled Brittany Barakat to get past Tech goalkeeper Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.).
Tech finally got on the scoreboard early in the second half when Jessica Myers (Richmond, Va.) sent a pass into the box and junior Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) headed the ball past Huskies' goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis to tie the game at 1-1.
Despite neutralizing the Huskies' offensive attack for much of the game, Tech was unable to keep Connecticut from scoring once more. After Hancock was issued a red card in the 74th minute of play for taking down Barakat in the box, the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick. Salla Ranta was able to put the ball past back-up keeper Natasha Dirda (McKees Rocks, Pa.) for the game-winning goal.
Before being ejected from the match, Hancock recorded 9 saves to keep the Hokies within striking distance, as the Huskies outshot Tech 25-6 for the game.
Tech will wrap up its season Wednesday afternoon, as the Hokies play host to area-rival Radford University. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Moseley Field.
