Women's Soccer Falls to Xavier
Hokies end season with 9-10 record

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team fell to the Xavier Musketeers, 3-1, Sunday in Cincinnati, Ohio. The loss came in the season finale for the Hokies and leaves them with a 9-10 record for the 2000 season.

The Musketeers got on the board first at the 25:22 mark in the match. Katie Porter scored on an Annette Gruber pass. Tracy Veith also was given an assist on the play.

Xavier would add to its 1-0 advantage before halftime. Lindsey Yonadi collected a pass from Gruber and took a shot that beat Hokie goalkeeper, freshman Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) The goal came at the 38:36 mark in the match.

The Hokies would cut the Xavier advantage to one goal early in the second half. Freshman Kathy Holdsworth took a pass from freshman Linda Bruce (Mechanicsville, Va.) and netted a goal that made the score 2-1. The goal came at the 52:17 mark in the match.

The Musketeers would seal the victory when Gruber made the final score 3-1 in favor of Xavier after she scored on a penalty kick at the 83:38 mark in the match.

Hankcock played the entire match in goal for the Hokies. She collected 5 saves on 11 Xavier shots and allowed three goals. Two goalkeepers shared time for Xavier. Megan Veith played the first 60:45 in the match and tallied 2 saves and allowed the lone Tech goal. Missey White played the final 29:15 of the match, totaling three saves.

Tech was lead this season by freshmen standouts Emily Barnhart (Columbus, Ohio) and Bruce. Barnhart started in all but two games for the Hokies and saw action in all matches but one. She led the team in total points with 15 and shots taken with 59. She scored five goals on the year and had five assists. Bruce saw action in 13 of the Hokies 19 games, starting in nine of them. She also scored five goals on the year and added five assist to bring her season point total to 11, which was tied for second on the team.

Not far behind the two freshmen was junior Victoria Sarfo-Kantanka (Glen Allen, Va.) Sarfo-Kantanka finished the year with 11 points also. She played in 18 games for the Hokies in 2000, starting in 13 of them.
