DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team came up short Friday night as the Davidson Wildcats handed the Hokies a 2-1 overtime loss in a non-conference match. With the loss, Tech falls to 2-7-1 on the year as Davidson improves to 5-5-1 overall.

Just over four minutes into overtime, a Virginia Tech foul set up the direct kick for Davidson junior Deneille Erickson. Erikson sent the ball just over the outstretched hands of Tech goalkeeper Natasha Dirda (McKees Rocks, Va.) and into the back of the net, to give the Wildcats their first non-conference victory of the season.

Virginia Tech came out aggressive and dominated much of the first half, outshooting the Wildcats 12-5. The Hokies scored first on a breakaway goal by junior Jessica Myers (Richmond, Va.) at the 19:30 mark of the game. Freshman Kjersti Trout (Stafford, Va.) provided the assist for her 12th point of the season.

With time running out in the first half, Davidson's Heather Maloney converted on a corner kick to tie the game. Maloney, this week's Southern Conference Player of the Week, scored her seventh goal of the season and 34th of her career.

After intermission, the Wildcats came back strong on both ends of the field. Defensively the 'Cats held the Hokies to three shots in the second period and outshot them 4-3. Sophomore Sarah Hobart had a stellar performance in goal, making nine saves on the afternoon including two diving saves in the second half to keep Virginia Tech from scoring.

Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md.) and Dirda combined for six saves in the game. Hancock made four saves in the first half, while Dirda had one save in the second half and another in overtime.

The Hokies will look to rebound Sunday afternoon when they host the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs on Moseley Field at 1 p.m.
