Hokies Blank Radford, 2-0
Holdsworth and Barnhart each score eighth goal of the year
October 8, 2003 RADFORD, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team got a great effort from its defense and a goal each from its two leading goal scorers as the Hokies edged New River Valley rival Radford, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon. The Hokies improved to 7-5-0 overall by limiting the powerful Highlander offense to only four shots. Senior Kathy Holdsworth and Emily Barnhart each scored their eighth goal of the season to help the Hokies eclipse last season's win total of six. Holdsworth struck first as she recorded her second consecutive game-winning goal. A long service ball into the Highlander box careened off several players before Holdsworth gained control and slammed a shot to the back of the net. Her score was her 19th career goal, giving her 41 career points, and moving her past Carmen Chestnut into fifth place in career points. In the second half, Barnhart, the Hokies' all-time leading scorer, added another tally to her record at 66:17. Barnhart received a through ball and dribbled into the box. A Highlander slide tackle seemed to thwart a scoring chance, but she regained control and beat Radford keeper Annaliese Yoder with her 23rd career goal. While the defense was shutting down the Highlanders, the Hokie offense was relentless in its attack, racking up 15 shots and four corner kicks to just four shots and one corner for the Highlanders. Hokie keeper Mallory Soldner didn't see too many attacks come her way and only had to make one save. The Hokies will step back into BIG EAST play this Friday during Homecoming Week as they host Miami at 7 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium.
