Hokies Overpower Rhode Island

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Joy Nsubuga netted two goals to lead the Virginia Tech women‚s soccer team over Rhode Island, 4-1, Friday at Tech Soccer Field.

Carmen Chestnut (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) started the scoring at the 9:53 mark off an assist from Wendy Kotwas (Conesus, N.Y.).

Nsubuga (Hollysprings, N.C.) netted her first goal off assists from Chestnut and Kotwas at the 48:48 mark. Nsubuga struck again at the 62:03 mark off an assist from Emily Bielefeld (Columbia, M d.).

Kotwas finished out the scoring for Tech at the 71:00 mark.

Rhode Island attempted a late rally with Lindsey Fish netting the lone goal at the 89:48 mark.

Tech goalkeeper Catherine Fulkerson (Fairfax, Va.) played 82 minutes in goal with four saves and zero goals allowed. Shannon Janko (Sou thboro, Mass.) finished the final eight minutes in goal with zero saves and one goal allowed.

Tech tallied 30 shots, five corner kicks, four saves and five fouls. Rhode Island totaled 10 shots, six corner kicks, nine saves and nine fouls.

With the win, the Hokies improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10. Tech will return to action on Sunday, October 10 when it faces Massachusetts at Tech Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
