Hokies earn exhibition victory over Miami
Hallberg's two assists highlight Tech's 3-0 win over the Redhawks
August 19, 2005 BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore midfielder Heather Hallberg collected a pair of assists, while three different Hokies tallied goals as Virginia Tech kicked off its women's soccer season with a 3-0 triumph over Miami University in exhibition action Friday at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium. The teams played three, 30 minute periods, instead of the usual 45 minute halves in the exhibition. After a scoreless first period, Tech got on the board when Hallberg crossed the ball from the far corner to senior Ashley Stoutland for a 1-0 lead. True freshman Mauri Liberati was also credited with an assist on the play. Eight minutes later the Hokies struck again, this time redshirt freshman Elizabeth Guise tapped in an Erin Moore corner kick from five feet out to give Tech a 2-0 lead. Moore, a sophomore from Poolesville, Md., led the team with seven assists last season. The Hokies added an insurance goal at the 80 minute mark as freshman Ashley Seldon scored off a Hallberg pass. Tech dominated the flow of the game, outshooting the visiting Redhawks 22-2 and holding an 11-4 edge on corner kicks. Three different Miami goalkeepers combined to make 11 saves, while the tandem of Mallory Soldner and Ashley Owens blanked the visitors. Virginia Tech will open the regular season next Friday at 3 p.m., with a non-conference match at American University.
