No. 7 Duke tops Tech
Blue Devils defeat Hokies 2-0 in Durham
September 22, 2005 DURHAM, N.C. - Sarah McCabe and Christie McDonald scored second half goals to lift No. 7 Duke past Virginia Tech, 2-0, in the Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer opener for both teams, Thursday evening at Koskinen Stadium. Despite being out-shot in the first half, the Hokies kept the initial 45 minutes scoreless thanks to the play of junior goalkeeper Mallory Soldner (Lanesville, Ind.). The 5-foot-10 keeper made three first half saves and finished the contest with a season-high 11 stops. Duke took the lead in the 55th minute, when McCabe tipped in a Lauren Tippetts cross from five yards out. The Blue Devils put the match out of rech in the closing minutes when McDonald recorded an unassisted tally off a rebound from eight yards out. Tech recorded three shots in the match, including two by sophomore Ashley Stinson (Acworth, Ga.). Sophomore Erin Moore (Poolesville, Md.) collected the final attempt. Head coach Kelly Cagle was also impressed with the play of seniors Molly McCall (Falls Church, Va.) and Kjersti Trout (Stafford, Va.) and sophomore Jordan Parsels (Woodbridge, Va.). The match displayed marked improvement by the Hokies' defense, which allowed a season-high nine goals in last year's contest in Durham. Tech (4-4-1 overall, 0-1 in ACC) continues its two-game road trip when it travels to No. 8 Wake Forest, Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
