Hokie rally comes up short at NC State
Parsels, Puglisi goals not enough for Tech
October 9, 2005 CARY, N.C. - Lydia McBath scored two goals, including the game-winner as NC State out-dueled Virginia Tech, 4-2, in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Trailing 2-0 early, Tech nearly overcame the two-goal first-half deficit, scoring twice in the final 47 minutes. However, McBath's second goal of the game, in the 66th minute, proved to be the deciding tally. Near the end of the first half, Tech cut the lead in half on sophomore Jordan Parsels' (Woodbridge, Va.) first career goal. Parsels' shot deflected off a Wolfpack defender and into the net at 43:02. After McBeth's goal made it 3-1, Tech answered again. This time, true freshman Laurie Beth Puglisi (Fairfax, Va.) put home a shot from 12 yards out after a pass from Shannon Poach (Chesapeake, Va.) in the 81st minute. Puglisi led the Hokies with five shots, including three on net. Minutes before her goal, Puglisi beat Wolfpack goalkeeper Kim Selz, but the shot was knocked away by two NCSU defenders. Tech controlled play for much of the second half, out-shooting the home team, 13-8 in the final 45 minutes. The Hokies held an 18-16 shot advantage in the match and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Tech (5-8-1 overall, 1-5 in the ACC) will host No. 4 Virginia at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium, Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
