BLACKSBURG, Va. - An Emily Jukich goal in the 71st minute gave Virginia Tech a 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth Saturday. The game, played in Richmond, Va., was the final of two exhibition matches the Hokies played this season, warming up for the home and season opener Aug. 25 against George Mason.

The first half ended scoreless, with Tech taking two shots to VCU's seven shots. Mallory Soldner preserved the first-half shutout, saving two of VCU's shots on goal.

Both teams remained scoreless until the 70:54 mark, when Hokie freshman Jukich picked up a loose ball and put it past VCU's goalkeeper Emily Niman. Hokie keeper Ashley Owens closed out the game to save the shutout and win.

VCU, ranked fourth in Soccer Buzz's preseason Mid-Atlantic poll and also receiving votes in the Soccer Buzz preseason Top 30, lead on shots 13 to Tech's 11. Hokie Mary Elizabeth Newton had the team high of five shots, while she and Jukich both notched two shots on goal during the game. Soldner and Owens split time in the net, each recording two saves.

Virginia Tech opens the regular season Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Tech Soccer Stadium. The Hokies host George Mason in a non-conference match.
